Abortion Pill (up to 10 weeks)

The Abortion Pill known as a non-surgical abortion or medication abortion has been used in our center for over 10 years.

How It Works

It blocks progesterone, the hormone that is needed to sustain a pregnancy. This is an option for women who do not what to undergo the surgical procedure early in the pregnancy.

Abortion Pill / Medication Abortion Process

  • A consultation with a doctor
  • Confirmation of pregnancy by ultrasound or a blood test. The patient should understand that at this early stage of pregnancy one cannot be 100% certain that the pregnancy is in the uterus and not in the fallopian tube.
  • The first pill is taken in the office. Usually there are no symptoms. Occasionally, you may experience some spotting or bleeding.
  • Your doctor will advise you on how the remaining pills are to be taken.
  • You may experience slight nausea. Usually you will have mild to strong cramping starting 1-2 hours after remaining pills are taken, followed by bleeding which can be heavy for several hours. It will become like your period, and light spotting may continue for up to 10 days.
  • Within three weeks, you must have a follow up visit to the office to confirm that the Abortion Pill was successful.
  • In 1%-2% of women, the pill does not work, and they need a further surgical abortion procedure.

Please note: Surgical completion of unsuccessful non-surgical abortions may be necessary for an additional fee.
